Holiday Sing-a-Long Program

400+ precious children gathered in a standing – room – only Fitness Center for a fabulous Holiday Sing-a-Long Program on the last day of school today. This is my eleventh year teaching music in the Lower School, and I think this year’s program was the best ever – not because I did it, but because of how everything fell together… the part you can’t practice, plan or predict. Today’s Holiday Sing-a-Long was one of those priceless moments we have as music teachers. I thought I would share the program just in case anyone is looking for ideas for next year. It’s fun to share!

We had great audience participation during “The 12 Days of Christmas.” Take a look at this little clip.

While a group of soloists led the singing, students came down into audience and “shagged’ with parents during the interlude. This was huge and very cool!
“Deck the Halls/ We Wish You a Merry Christmas” – by Paul and Teresa Jennings
Students held up giant signs of the first word in each line.

Christmas Jokes

In between each part of the program, there were groups of 4th graders who introduced the next song by telling Christmas jokes. It was all student-led and ended. The jokes the children came up with were very funny and were the perfect touch to an elementary age program.

Q.What did the grape say to the peanut butter?
A. – ’tis the season to be jelly!”

Knock, knock (Who’s there?)
Hanna. (Hanna who?)
Hanna partridge in a pear tree! (Led right in to the “12 Days of Christmas”)

Here are a few pictures from the Holiday Sing-a-Long Program.

  1. FAB! I too did a holiday singalong, but we couldn’t invite parents because our gym is only large enough to hold the 700 some odd kids on the floor and in the stands.

My program was that each group did a winter song, a traditional carol, and a fun song:
KDG: Snowman Jump from K-8 mag; Angel Band -with my own added lyrics; Up on the Housetop 1ST: If I Could Fly Like a Snowflake from K-8 mag; Mary Had a Baby; Jolly Old St Nicholas 2ND: Skating from our new music books; O Come, Little Children; Must Be Santa 3RD First Day of Winter from K-8 music mag; Go Tell It On the Mtn; It’s Time to Get Ready for Christmas 4TH Marshmallow world; Joy to the World – played on recorders first, then sung; December Nights December Lights 5TH Winter Wonderland; Rise Up Shepherd; Feliz Navidad 6TH: Rage and Roar (as a round); Angels We Have Heard on High; Mele Kalikimaka THen everyone sang Jingle Bells, Frosty, Dominic the Donkey, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, Hark the Herald Angels, I Want a Hippopotomus, Deck the Halls, Jingle Bell Rock, Rudolph, 12 Days and We Wish you… It was so fun.
    Merry Christmas!!!

  2. Carole, How exciting that you shared your program!! In my little corner of the world I feel so isolated at times, and you’ve given me new ideas for next year. I’m so pumped! Boy, if you had room for the parents to come, you would have a huge crowd!! It IS so much fun when all the children are singing…. I just love the energy!! – Cherie / Merry Christmas!!
