Pumpkin Beat Bundle for SMARTBoard and iPads first appeared on my blog last year. Since then, I’ve updated it and included a QR code linked to a downloadable Explain Everything file for those classes with 1:1 iPads.

Halloween in the music classroom would not be complete without these two Pumpkin Musical Beat Activities for the SMARTBoard.
Pumpkin Pull Musical Beat Activity:
In “Pumpkin Pull,” students pull rhythm pieces from the right side to correctly fill up the 3 measures of pumpkin beats. For added fun, students can race the Ghost of 16 seconds or the Ghost of 25 seconds.The kids have to fill the beats before the music ends. My students absolutely LOVE this game and try hard to beat the musical clock. It’s a winner! On the iPad version, the rhythmic pieces are stacked on the side of the page just like the SMARTBoard. Once the Ghost timer starts, everyone in the room can complete the activity using their iPads.

Pumpkin Beat Bundle for SMARTBoard and iPads would be a great activity for a substitute teacher during October. If you are using the paper version, I suggest you make two-sided copies and make extra… Those little critters always come back for more. For the overachiever, limit their use of the whole note!

Using rhythm instruments, have students play and record each rhythm page in Explain Everything.

Was this a school-wide ianititive or did you decide to jump in and do it for your classroom only. Our school is nowhere near where you seem to be, and part of seems to related to connectivity but also the technology we have available? I was never too big a fan of Smartboards myself, though many of my colleagues lauded their capabilities in their classrooms. You note that I was bound to using my computer via projector to show examples to the class , which is the same situation I am under in my classroom now. I must admit that despite having Apple devices of my own (a Macbook and iPad), I was also under the impression that Apple TV was simply a device for accessing media via iTunes or Apple. I guess it does that, but even more than I had been aware of. Do all the students have iPads because the school requires it, or they bring in their own tablet devices? Anyway, this kind of device in the classroom would improve collaboration between teacher and students in the classroom; something that our current technology does not support. I will share your blogpost with the tech people at our school to see what they think.
Raul, Thank you for your question and for visiting my site. I teach in a private 1:1 school. We are in our 4th year of the 1:1 teaching model and our school provided the iPads for each of our students. I am a SMART Exemplary Educator, SMART Certified as a lesson creator and trainer. I use the SMARTBoard along with the iPads to create, deliver, and collaborate with my elementary music students each day. Although our entire school K-12 has iPads and SMARTBoards, I was very eager from the beginning to learn how to integrate technology into my music class and have led the way by example and training. Teachers use the SMARTBoards in our elementary classrooms to deliver interactive lessons (and as a projector at times.)
The upper grades have been moving away from the interactive boards to Apple TV’s as the SMARTBoards break and they choose to project information rather than interact with it. This saddens me, but learning how to create interactive lessons takes time and effort, and too often teachers think it’s much easier to just use technology as a substitute.
As you can read from my blog posts, the collaboration between teacher and students has grown each year. In fact, the children are now able to use the iPad as a tool for learning just as effortlessly as they would use a pencil. If you read the posts on Debussy and Handel, you will see how the whole dynamic of teaching has changed. The students drive the learning; their curiosity now has “legs” and they can research like never before. I’m also able to flip the learning because of the technology the students have readily available at home.
