23 Updated SMARTBoard Musical Activities
This collection is free to download and use throughout the year. While not an all-inclusive music lesson, these 23 Updated SMARTboard Musical Activities for Young Children work  best as interactive supplements to standard musical concepts for young music students. Many of the pages will work across multiple grade levels just by changing instructions. Most importantly, the activities have been kid-tested and refined for maximum fun and engagement.
Now that I have a new SMART Board 6065 interactive flat panel and the latest notebook software, I am updating my lessons and formatting them for the wide-screen (16:9) display. Summer is the perfect time to improve the page layouts for easier navigation, and replace the flash activities with the new HTML5 LAB activities. By the way, if you would like this updated version in the standard full-screen (4:3) view, just send me an email and I’ll post it for you.

Features included in the 23 Updated SMARTBoard Musical Activities for Young Children:
Home Page | Navigational Home PageFor easy navigation, there is a “Home Page” with links to the different activities and notes. When I’m building a collection of activities, I find it easiest to use links back and forth to choose what comes next. |
Safe Share Video LinksMost of the activities include a link to a video found on YouTube. These video links go through SafeShare.tv so there will be no distractions when showing the video. It’s amazing how many unnecessary conversations will be prevented just by purifying the videos. In order to access the videos, you can either touch the video button in the navigation bar, or use the “Next” arrow to access the embedded video on the following page. I think you’ll find that no matter what version of notebook software you are using the links will work for you. |
Navigation BarI’ve experimented with navigation bars and really think you will find this version helpful as you use this file. All the links are in a consistent location and include several options. It’s probably overkill, but there are links hidden everywhere on the pages. When I touch an object, I want something to happen!! |
Activity BuilderThere are three activities using the SMART Activity Builder Add On. The Activity Builder allows objects to either be accepted or rejected so students will instantly receive engaging feedback. |
Magic PenAfter viewing the “Gina Treble Clef” video, students can use the Magic Pen and race to trace the fancy letter G in the treble clef. This kid-tested activity is a unique way of introducing the treble clef. The Magic Pen is a game-changer. Add it to the toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar and dragging it from the drop-down collection to a location on your toolbar. |
Infinite CloningThe Sol-Mi birds, Line and Space sticks, Farm Rhythms, and Egg rhythms use the infinite cloning feature. Once you have pulled out as many as you need and have completed the activity with one student, use the reset page button to maximize your teaching minutes. It’s so much faster than using the “undo” button! |
Reset Page – Toolbar Action ButtonDon’t forget to use the Reset Page icon to delete the pulled-out images and reset the page for the next student. Add the Reset Page action button by right-clicking the toolbar and dragging it from the drop-down collection to a spot on the toolbar for handy use. |
SMART LAB Assessment ActivityThe Forte/ Piano activity has two options. On the first page, the students touch a diamond and it fades to an image that make either a loud or soft sound. On the second page, I used the SMART Lab  Flip Out activity. Students touch one side and it flips to reveal the soft/loud image on the other side.  The Flip Out LAB activity is one of the new and improved non-flash, HTML5 activities for those with .notebook 16 or higher. I’m trying to explore these LAB activities as SMART introduces them to replace the non-working flash activities. Same activity created two ways, see what you think! The SMART Lab Flip Out assessment is located under the Add-on tab. |
Explore
I hope you will download and explore this free collection of SMARTBoard activities to use with your youngest students. I think it’s a nice improvement over the original collection I created several years ago. If you like it, let me know… I have more coming. How are you using the new LAB activities in your class? I would love to hear about it.
